SINN Fein councillor John Costelloe has demanded that employment opportunities for local residents be central to any plan to rejuvenate the Nicholas Street area of Limerick city centre.
“This must be borne in mind when deciding what businesses to attract into the area. Local residents and businesses are entitled to benefit in terms of jobs from any plans implemented by the local authority,” said Cllr Costelloe, who is himself a resident of Nicholas Street.
The City North representative has also demanded that Finance Minister Michael Noonan ensures that the Nicholas Street rejuvenation plans are finally delivered on.
Cllr Costelloe said that both he and other Nicholas Street residents are long accustomed to plans being announced for the area which “ultimately go nowhere”.
“The last thing that residents need is further disappointment,” he said.
“Limerick City councillors have done our part by pledging €200,000 to this project. It’s now up to the minister to play his part to bring the project over the line.”
“The time to end the stagnation of Nicholas Street is long overdue. There is unprecedented opportunity here to create a major cultural hub against the backdrop of our unique and authentic medieval area. We have waited a long time for this opportunity so Minister Noonan needs to deliver.
“Clearly a successful project will attract inward investment. Let’s ensure that local residents and businesses are not left behind,” Cllr Costello concluded.
