Soccer – Limerick FC’s unbeaten season still on

Screen shot 2016-09-29 at 10.39.43BY NEXT Wednesday, Limerick FC could potentially be two matches away from going an entire league season unbeaten, although their undefeated First Division status came close to falling by the wayside last week.
The Super Blues dropped points for just the third time in 24 games last Friday when they drew 1-1 with Shelbourne at Tolka Park, with the home side leading for the majority of the match.
With Limerick beginning the game like a team suffering a hangover from the previous week’s EA Sports Cup final defeat, Shels hit the front midway through the first half when a defensive error gifted Adam Evans with an invitation to score that he did not pass up. It could have been even worse for Martin Russell’s side on the half-hour mark when Dylan Kavanagh’s free kick cannoned off the crossbar.
Limerick bossed possession without creating many chances after half-time but their persistence paid off with just seven minutes to go when Robbie Williams volleyed an equaliser from close range.
The Super Blues’ next challenge in their quest to remain unbeaten in the league takes them to Cobh Ramblers on Saturday night (kick-off 7:15pm) before they host Athlone Town at Markets Field on Tuesday night at 7:45pm in a rearranged match.
Should Limerick survive those two games without defeat, they only need to overcome Drogheda United at home and Cabinteely away to become the first team since 1927 to complete an entire League of Ireland season undefeated.
