TWO men are in Garda custody in Limerick following a high speed chase through the city centre this Tuesday morning.

Shortly after 10.30am, it is understood that two males, driving a 2001 registered wine-coloured Opel Astra saloon attracted the attention of gardai in a marked patrol car.

The pair, it is understood fled the scene on the Northside of the city and chase ensued as gardai sought to stop the vehicle.

The car drove, at speed over Matthew Bridge and on to Rutland Street after breaking traffic lights at the intersection outside the Hunt Museum.

The pair, under pursuit from the Garda patrol car, broke the lights at Arthur’s Quay and struck a car adjacent to the park, before fleeing the scene and driving out of the city centre over Sarsfiled Bridge.

The pursuit through the city saw the car, believed to have been stolen earlier, break a number of traffic light intersections while driving dangerously and at speed.

The pursuit was halted when members of the armed Regional Support Unit blocked the car near the Strand Hotel as it tried to further evade gardai.
