Fox Jaw: “I can only imagine how awful it all sounded”

RECENT single โ€˜Do You Want It Allโ€™ by Limerick rockers Fox Jaw is one of the best things the band has done so far and was picked up by more than 30 college radio stations in the US. Now the band is set to celebrate ten years on the road with a new EP to be launched in Dolanโ€™s this weekend. Singer Ronan Mitchell and Limerick Post took a look back over a decade of loud gigs, near misses and serious fun.

Fox Jaw sound better than ever on this impressive EP of brooding gothic blues that the band routinelyย  conjure up so well, led by lush vocals from singer Ronan Mitchell.

The new four track EP features this yearโ€™s releases โ€˜Do You Want It All?โ€˜ and โ€˜Hit It Offโ€™ and opens with the slow burner โ€˜Weaknessโ€™ closing with the atmospheric โ€˜Hide & Creepโ€™.

Fox Jaw formed ten years ago telling us it has been a decade of โ€œover 300 shows, eight singles, five vinyls releases, two albums, two EPs, countless festival appearances, TV appearances, magazine covers, music video awards, Album Of The Year awards, and only one flat tyre.โ€

The band put on a terrific show at Electric Picnic last week. A show that almost didnโ€™t happen as some of the members were still trying to get access to the festival site minutes before show time due to some logistical mix ups.

So what happened at Electric Picnic?

Ronan: It was probably one of the most stressful shows weโ€™ve ever done. We had struggles with production and security staff and there was a time when we really thought we werenโ€™t going to make it to the stage in time and we wouldnโ€™t get to play.

But Jerry Fish swooped in and saved the day and got us there, literally without a second to spare. After all that, the show itself was pretty damn cathartic.

Fox Jawโ€™s favourite gig memory?

I donโ€™t think that thereโ€™s one gig that sticks out over all the others, to be honest. Although, opening for Calvin Harris was pretty mental. Playing to about 1,500 people who were vibing on a totally different frequency to us. But the absurdity of it all made it us have a great show.

Worst /funniest gig?

We were in a bar in Germany a few years ago and there was whole back line set up on stage for anyone who wanted to jam. We spent the whole night drinking and playing, swapping instruments and playing songs with strangers who happened to be there.

I can only imagine how awful it all sounded, we cleared the place fairly quickly! But that was seriously fun.

Whatโ€™s the secret to keeping this band together

Weโ€™re all really close friends, which definitely helps. When youโ€™re on tour, youโ€™re surrounded by the same few people for extended periods of time, sometimes during very stressful situations.

So youโ€™d better be sure you enjoy their company. Fortunately for us, we get along great!

Fox Jaw launch the new EP โ€˜Black Light Vignetteโ€™ at Dolanโ€™s Warehouse this Saturday, September 17.
