MARY Immaculate College Students’ Union (MISU), in collaboration with An Garda Síochána, Henry Street and Mary Immaculate College (MIC) have launched An Garda Síochána’s Campus Watch Initiative for the 2016/2017 Academic Year.
Campus Watch, which is now in its fourth year of operation at MIC, aims to make the College campus and its environs a safer place for students to live, work and study. Students can access information and advice on issues such as personal safety, security at their accommodation and road safety. As part of the initiative, a weekly Garda clinic is held on campus, which provides students with the opportunity to seek advice and guidance on a range of matters.
MISU President James Deegan, noted, “Mary Immaculate College Students’ Union is delighted to participate in the Garda Campus Watch initiative, through the hosting of the Garda Clinics. These clinics provide a vital service to our students and we welcome the opportunity to strengthen the existing links between MISU, MIC and the Community Gardaí. On behalf of MISU, I would like to thank Henry Street Garda Station for their support, in particular Garda Michael Hennessy; Chief Superintendent David Sheahan and Superintendent Derek Smart.
Professor Michael A. Hayes, President of Mary Immaculate College, commented, “We are delighted with the continuation of the Garda Clinics on campus as part of the Campus Watch programme. The Garda Clinic provides our students with the unique opportunity to connect with local Gardaí in the safe environment of their campus.”
Chief Superintendent David Sheahan of Henry Street Garda Station noted, ‘’the Garda On-Campus Clinic is a collaborative approach by the Gardaí, College Authorities, including the Students’ Union and the students, aimed at making the College Campus and its environs a safer place within which students and staff can work, study and live. The appointed Liaison Garda, Garda Michael Hennessy, will be available at the Garda On-Campus Clinic to give advice and guidance on a range of matters from personal security, security of accommodation, vehicles and property to such matters as anti-social behaviour and road safety that won’t intrude on the life of a student but will keep them safe and allow them fulfil their ambition as a student.’’
The Garda Clinic, which is a free service, operates on Tuesdays from 12.30m – 2pm in the Students’ Union.
