Munster and Ireland rugby star, Conor Murray, took time out from his busy training schedule to make a surprise visit to his former primary school, Scoil Íde in Limerick today with Life Style Sports to celebrate the #MunsterRising socks campaign. The initiative will see the Munster squad tog out in socks that will represent a selection of local school and club colours for their showdown against Maori All Blacks in Thomond Park on November 11th.
Over the past number of weeks, Munster Rugby supporters have been visiting www.lifestylesports.com/munsterrising, nominating their schools and clubs to be in with the chance to be represented on the pitch by the squad and see their colours worn by the Munster team, in what will be a hugely anticipated encounter.
Along with seeing their club or school socks on the big stage under lights in Thomond Park, winning entrants will also enjoy the full match-day experience with match-tickets, a stadium tour, and the opportunity to lay their socks out for the players in the Munster dressing room before kick-off.
As part of the initiative, former Scoil Íde pupil, Murray returned to lead an impromptu training session with the stars of tomorrow, before partaking in a Q&A, along with signings and selfies. The Munster scrum-half gave valuable advice on how hard work and determination helped him progress from his mini days at Scoil Íde through to his senior career with Munster and Ireland.
Ray D’Arcy, Rugby Coach in Scoil Íde commented: “It was such a great experience for the kids to be coached by Conor today. Coming from Scoil Íde, the kids really look up to him, so to have the opportunity to train with him is an unforgettable experience. The #MunsterRising socks initiative is a fantastic way to get communities involved with Munster Rugby. The squad are idols to these kids, so to see their club or school represented on the pitch would really be something special for them!”
Conor Murray said, “I have so many great memories of my time in Scoil Íde, both in the classroom and on the rugby pitch, so it was great to take a trip down memory lane today. The kids were brilliant, and I really enjoyed the experience. They all had a great energy and a huge appetite for the sport, which is fantastic to see. Hopefully, in years to come, we’ll be seeing some of these young players rise up and represent Munster in the future.”
Debbie Byrne, Marketing Director at Life Style Sports said, “We are delighted to have Conor with us today to celebrate the #MunsterRising socks initiative. He is a superb role model for the kids of Scoil Íde, and rugby fans of all ages. We wanted to create an unforgettable match-day experience for fans, and what better way to bring local clubs and schools closer to Munster Rugby than by having the players represent them on the pitch in an exciting fixture against the All Blacks.”
Scoil Íde were selected as the winning school after Barbara Kelly, mother of Stephen, entered into a Life Style Sports competition to win a training session with the Irish international scrum-half.
