DRUNKEN students and revellers are keeping the residents of a Limerick city complex awake until 4am each night with one young mother claiming that the “next two weeks will be hell”
Mother of three, Christyna Mulcahy, told the Limerick Post that for a number of years she and her family, along with many other residents at the Watergate housing complex feel “forgotten” and abandoned as late night party revellers are allowed “cause havoc on the streets”.
“It is unbelievable what we have to put up with. Last night we had over 200 people in the middle of the road screaming, shouting, singing and some even fighting until 4am.
“They blocked cars from using the road”, and Christyna said that on one occasion she witnessed a group trying to overturn a car while someone was in it.
With one child still in school, she said that “our children have to walk to school through people’s blood, urine, vomit and sometimes actual s**t, not to mention broken glass everywhere.
“We may be a small housing complex and people seem to forget that we are here. It is not fair on any of the residents and the housing department in city hall just don’t care.
In 2014, Christyna highlighted the issue and said that “the only night we have peace is a Wednesday night. We are all sick of it. Between the concerts and movie nights in the Milk market and all the pubs and clubs, we get no rest and hardly no sleep.
“As the students return to third level, we will have to put up with this disturbance on a nightly basis. And with freshers’ week, it will last for two weeks straight. It’s going to be hell.
Christyna said it is after 5am when most residents and children finally got some sleep.
“It’s gone beyond a joke.” she said.
The Watergate residents say they would like the music levels at the nearby venues checked and “more of a Garda presence from opening to closing to keep the crowds away from our area.
“We have tried for years to get something done but no one can seem to help us.
And she believes that the only way people in authority will understand their dilemma is if they experience the late night “escapades” from themselves.
“I ask you to take a walk down yourself about 2.30 to 3am and see for yourself what we have to endure.
“We were told we needed to get in a petition to the courts before the license renewal date and we did that two years ago and yet the licenses were still renewed – so it is clear that no one is listening to us,” she said.
