Opinion – Tokyo Olympics will be 2020

SAD as it is to say, I will not miss the Olympics. For the first time in my 36 years, I was not enthralled by the spectacle. It was heart breaking.
Yes, being an Olympian will always mean more to someone who has achieved that title and it can never be taken away from them.
However, something that can be taken away from the 2016 games are the medals won and records set. In years to come, much like games passed, some winners will be remember for cheating their way to Gold. I’ll always remember the ’88 games in Seoul. As a sports mad kid, I loved that it started on the 8/8/88 (for luck), I can remember I had a Seoul 88 tee-shirt and all.
Yet the games are now forever tainted, in my adult mind, by the 100m race which has been labelled as the “dirtiest race ever run”.
What will history make of 2016? What example are we setting for our kids? What will come of ticket inquiry after doping inquiry? Sadly, Tokyo 2020 might not even give us the necessary hindsight for that.
