FIVE men have been arrested in Limerick as part of a crackdown operation against the theft of cars.

An Garda Siochana’s Operation Thor has been active throughout the country and the latest spate of arrests occurred when gardai from Roxboro Road, Henry Street and Newcastle West Garda stations carried out a number of planned searches under warrant.

The searches were carried out on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Operation Thor was set up to target the criminal activities of a number of gangs in the region.

The arrests were made after gardai established links to a number of males and the stolen vehicles.

Garda stopped a 142 registered BMW that had been stolen in Castletroy the night before and a male (27) was arrested on the southside of the city.

As a result of a follow up operation, a 141-registered Volkswagen was also recovered.
