Sir,
Our failed Limerick 2020 bid has left marks on the city, both good and bad.
Good in the fact that we all pulled together in a bid to take on the super heavyweights of culture and event hosting. In a nearly-there attempt, we never got to realise our potential but at least, we know it is there.
The city was alive for the street party on the day the bid judges came to town.
Colour, spectacle and good vibes came to Limerick during a hive of activity, who could complain of that.
Alas the days ended and so did our interest in the European Capital of Culture.
Bad in the fact that we are now left with these meaningless, pointless slap-ons around the city that will act as nothing more than a banner of defeat.
And while the super heavyweight won, do we need a constant and colourful reminder of that shortfall despite the supposed minor economic boost we may be able to cling to in four years time?
Over to Limerick’s local authority to remove the reminders or change the canvas – for the good of our city and its people.
Win or learn from our mistakes, Limerick 2020 is no more, let us move on.
