This week marked the first anniversary of the death of Jason Corbett, the Limerick man who was beaten to death in his home in North Carolina on August 2 of last year.
And, while his family continue to mourn his passing, news has emerged that Jason’s second wife, Molly Martens, and her father Thomas Martens, who have been charged with second degree murder and the manslaughter of Jason, will face trial next week. The case is due to return to the courts on August 8, although it is not yet known whether either of the accused will take the stand to give evidence.
In the wake of Jason’s death a battle for the custody of his two children ensued. Ms Martens and Jason’s sister, Tracy Lynch, both sought to become the children’s full-time guardians with the Clerk of the Superior Court in the US ultimately ruling in Ms Lynch’s favour.
The children are now living with their aunt and uncle in Limerick despite efforts by the Martens family to contest the ruling.
On the anniversary of his death, the Justice for Jason Facebook page, run by members of his family, posted a heartfelt message to honour his passing, “We gather to remember the big and the little things that made a special place in our heart. To remember those happy times when we laughed and those times when our hearts broke as one. We gather to share the pain. To hurt when you hurt without presuming that our pain is the same. To cry when you cry and not try to hide or avoid our tears.”
