Team Ireland swimmers Nicholas Quinn, Fiona Doyle, Shane Ryan and diver Oliver Dingley are now settled in the Olympic Village and ready to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games. Swimming at the Games begins on Saturday (6th) with Dingley having to wait until August 15th for the 3m Springboard event.
Nicholas Quinn will be the first Irish swimmer in action when he takes to the pool in the Rio Aquatics Centre on Saturday for the 100m Breaststroke Preliminaries. The Mayo man will be testing the pool and getting over any nerves ahead of his main event on Tuesday; the 200m Breaststroke.
Speaking ahead his Olympic debut Quinn commented “We’ve had a great week of training in Uberlandia and now I’m settled into the village and looking forward to racing. I spent last week just getting some finishing touches done and now I’m ready to get going. I’m excited at the moment, no nerves yet. On Saturday, I just want to get out and get experience and a feel for it all and then bring that into my main race on Tuesday.”
Quinn’s best time in the 100m Breaststroke is 1:00.95, the 23 year old swam that time at the Eindhoven Cup in April this year to take Gold in the event, qualifying for the Games just two days later in the 200m event.
Fiona Doyle and Shane Ryan will make their Olympic debuts on Sunday in the 100m Breaststroke and 100m Backstroke respectively.
Quinn, Doyle and Ryan will not take part in Friday’s Opening Ceremony in order to rest for their events on Saturday and Sunday.
