Soccer – Limerick FC on road to Waterford

Martin Russell’s men won 5-2 in Waterford in March and then romped to a 7-2 victory over Roddy Collins’ team at the Markets Field on the May bank holiday weekend.
The Super Blues make the trip eastward having extended their lead at the summit of the First Division last Saturday to 17 points courtesy of a rollercoaster 4-3 home win over UCD.
Chris Mulhall edged Limerick in front inside the opening five minutes before Robbie Williams received an early red card, conceding the penalty from which Gary O’Neil equalised.
Kieran Marty Waters then gave the visitors a 2-1 lead, one which they maintained for the remainder of the first half, although Maxi Kouogun was highly fortunate not to give away a penalty for what seemed a clear handball.
Limerick were later awarded a spot kick and UCD were simultaneously reduced to 10 men. Stephen Kenny netted the penalty to level the match once more.
Mulhall scored his second of the game on the stroke of 60 minutes as the home side regained the lead, with Aaron Greene later making it 4-2 from close range. A late Greg Sloggett penalty ensured a nervy finish for the Super Blues, but they picked up their 14th league win out of 15 following a goal-filled encounter.
On the face of it, business as usual for rampant Limerick but the concession of three goals will undoubtedly sharpen their focus prior to a fixture which has seen 16 goals across its two most recent editions.
