The Limerick teen appeared before Limerick District Court this week

A 13-year-old Limerick boy has appeared at a special sitting of Limerick District Court charged with allegedly engaging in lewd act with a seven-year-old.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested this Wednesday and brought to Roxboro Road Garda Station.

Accompanied by his mother, the boy was charged with anoffence contrary to section 3 of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998 with the prosecution claiming that he coerced the 7-year-old boy to engage in a lewd act.

The court heard that he made no reply when he was given a copy of the charge sheet.

Following a review of the statement of complaint made by the alleged injured party and of other material in the investigation file, the court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions ruled that the matter proceed to the higher courts by way of trial on indictment.

Defence solicitor Sarah Ryan said the teenagerwould require legal aid and a statement of means would be furnished to the court in due course.

Sgt Donal Cronin said that there was no objection to bail and Judge Marian O’Leary remanded him to appear before the court again on October 18.
