LIMERICK FC returned from the mid-season break with a 13th league win out of 14 after beating Cabinteely 2-0 at Stradbrook last Friday.
The ‘Blues’ were without the likes of Shane Duggan, John O’Flynn and Aaron Greene but still picked up the three points on a night that saw their lead at the top of the First Division extended to 16 points thanks to Drogheda United’s defeat to UCD, who moved into second spot as a result.
Shane Tracy opened the scoring just before the half-hour with a trademark free kick, the 50th league goal of his career, while teenager Sean McSweeney registered his first career league goal with a deft chip over Cabinteely goalkeeper Michael Kelly.
Martin Russell’s team are back at the Markets Field this Saturday evening when they welcome his former club UCD to Shannonside. It’s a repeat of the opening day fixture from March, when the Super Blues came from behind to win 3-1 and set in motion a sequence of 13 league victories, a run that was eventually halted by Drogheda in Limerick’s last home league game a month ago. Russell’s men also won 2-1 against the Students at the UCD Bowl in April.
On Sunday and Monday, Limerick FC will host a Golf Classic at Ballykisteen Golf Club. Tee times are 2pm-5pm on Sunday and 9am-2pm on Monday. First prize is entry to the Ballykisteen PGA Pro-Am on Tuesday August 9 with European Tour Pro Damien McGrane as playing partner.
