LIME Tree will host what sounds like a ‘radio reality’ show with Brendan Balfe’s ‘Sorry, We’re Off the Air’ on Saturday June 4, 8pm.
Himself a national treasure through decades in broadcasting, much of it ‘light entertainment’, he recalls the personalities and eccentrics who became household names in Ireland and indeed, elsewhere, through life on the air and in TV when RTE really did rule the soundwaves .
Brendan does more than deliver the inside stories with mischief. He plays clips from programmes as well as the unintended mistakes or ‘bloopers’ that every broadcaster makes.
His tales of Gay Byrne, Mike Murphy, Maurice O’Doherty, Dermot Morgan and others steer just this side of the libel laws. He also recalls meeting greats such as Peggy Lee, Stan Freberg and Jimi Hendrix.
