THREE men are to appear in court in Limerick this Thursday morning charged in connection with a vicious attack where a man was beaten and had his feet nailed to a kitchen floor last year.
Last November, a 51-year-old furniture dealer was lured to a house on the Southside of the city where he was beaten by a number of men dressed in white boiler suits who demanded that money, they claimed he owed, be paid over.
The victim was strapped to a chair and his life was threatened during the ordeal which culminated in one of the attackers using a nail gun to nail his feet to the kitchen floor.
Upwards of 30 gardai were involved in the investigation into the circumstances of the incident which occurred on Monday, September 14.
Details of the gruesome attack were heard at a special sitting of Limerick District Court in November of last year when Gardaí were then seeking an extension to further detain and question two of the three men arrested in connection with the attack.
Detective Superintendent Jim Ryan previously told Judge Aeneas McCarthy that the county Limerick man went to a city housing estate after a phone call about a furniture deal. He arrived at the house and was invited into the kitchen where a number of men in white boiler suits attacked him.
He was hit on the head, threatened and strapped to a chair before one of his attackers nailed his feet to the kitchen floor. With the help of a friend, he made his way to University Hospital Limerick where he was treated for his injuries.
At the time, gardai arrested a number of men for questioning as they believed the men had information about the identity of the perpetrators of the attack.
Forensics samples were also taken from the scene and analysed at the Garda Forensic laboratory and DNA profiling will also be “very relevant” to the case according to the investigating officers.
On Tuesday last, two men were arrested under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and held at Roxboro Garda Station, while a third man was arrested on Wednesday and held at Mayorstone Garda Station.
All three men are to be brought before a sitting of Limerick District Court this Thursday morning for formal charge.
They are to be charged with assault causing harm contrary to the provisions of section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and also with the alleged false imprisonment of the victim on September 14, 2015.
