Left, Grace, Fiachra and Sinead star in Villiers School production of ‘The Beggar’s Opera’ for two nights beginning Thursday 19 at Belltable

VILLIERS School’s Transition Year students present ‘The Beggar’s Opera’ at Belltable this Thursday 19, Friday 20 at 8pm.

This John Gay play presents 50+ teenagers on stage in an adaption by professionals Darren Maher and Maeve Stone, ex-Villiers.

Ann Blake, Niamh Bowen, Marie Boylan and Mags O’Donoghue are experienced theatre practitioners working with Villiers on this.

The storyline: Macheath, outlaw and regular of Newgate Penitentiary, is in trouble with the law yet again. However this time, he’s not inside for thieving, robbing or riding his Harley too fast. This time it is the women in his life who put him back on death row.

Miss Polly, a pageant queen and daughter of the town’s crooked lawyer Peachum, has her eyes set on Macheath. She’s not the only one. Lucy Lockitt, daughter of the drunken prison warden, has also enjoyed a roll in the hay with Macheath.

With backstabbing, thievery and jealousy rife in the town, this blackguard has made plenty of enemies.

Is there any way that he can escape the chair? Will there be a reprieve?
