A #Limerick baby is to remain in foster care

A THREE month #Limerick baby boy is to remain in foster care after Tusla, the child and family agency, was granted a 28-day interim care order at a County Limerick court on Wednesday morning.

The order was made after the court was told there was a serious risk to the child’s safety and wellbeing.

Last week, Judge Marian O’Leary granted a temporary order after she was told the infant’s mother was found intoxicated at the scene of disturbance in a County Limerick housing estate.

The baby was taken to University Hospital Limerick after gardai from four different County Limerick Stations responded to the disturbance.

The mother was arrested and detained at a County Limerick Garda Station where she slept for the night before being released shortly after 7am. She later appeared in court objecting to Tulsa being granted temporary care of her son.

Senior Social Worker, Una Kissane said she believed the mother was a chronic alcoholic and had attended hospital with “serious raised levels of alcohol” while seven months pregnant.

The woman claimed that she was capable of caring for her son who she said was “thriving”. She did accept she needed help but said she could manage with the support of family.

However, Judge O’Leary ordered that the child was to be taken in to care and this Wednesday, the order was further extended for a period of 28 days despite the objections of the boy’s mother.

The case has been adjourned to May 18 next for review.
