IN response to an article in the Limerick Post last week in which a council tenant complained about mould at her at her apartment on Lord Edward Street in Limerick city centre, the local authority says that the problem may be caused by lack of heating.
In a statement issued to the Limerick Post this week, a spokeswoman for Limerick City and County Council said that the property was inspected thoroughly by the Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS) in June 2014 and “deemed suitable for letting subject to minor works”.
The statement continued, “Under the RAS scheme, private rented properties provide an additional source of good quality rental accommodation for eligible persons. The property’s external walls have been dry-lined, a vent has been installed and the property is also insulated.”
“However, the tenant is not heating or ventilating her property, and these actions can cause mould and mildew. In addition, a vent has been blocked with cardboard sheets and a radiator has been removed from the wall. The tenant has been advised that this is adding moisture to her apartment.
“If the tenant has issues with the payment of electricity costs, she should refer herself to the Department of Social Protection for assistance”, the council statement concluded.
