UPWARDS of 30 drivers were caught holding or interacting with their mobile phones during a one hour @GardaTraffic checkpoint in Limerick city this Tuesday.
The Garda blitz checkpoint, situated on the Island Road in Limerick city this Tuesday, was conducted by Mayorstone based Gardai as part of a national operation where the drivers were detected holding their mobile phones while driving.
In a tweet posted on the national Garda twitter account, an image of a Garda bike parked on the Island Road was accompanied with the caption indicating that in excess of 30 drivers were stopped while using their phones.
The detections and checkpoint was part of a national garda operation to crack down on the number of offending drivers.
The garda checks will be going on throughout the bank holiday weekend.
Prosecuted drivers can face a mandatory court appearance and a fine of up to €1,000 if they are caught texting or accessing information on their phone while driving.
