Books of condolence for Terry

Picture: Press 22 EuropeÕs top radio broadcaster and the renowned portrait artist were presented with the highest honour Limerick can bestow on a citizen at a specially convened meeting of Limerick City Council. They now join the list of other high profile recipients of this rare title including: former US Presidents John F Kennedy and Bill Clinton; Pope John Paul 11 and successful Limerick businessman JP McManus. Conferring the Honorary Freedom of the City on both men, Mayor of Limerick Cllr Joe Leddin said it is reserved for well known statesmen who have made a unique contribution to the common good or natives who have brought credit to the city by their contribution to the common good.

Limerick City and County Council has opened Books of Condolence for the late Sir Terry Wogan. Members of the public are invited to sign one of three Books at Council Headquarters in Merchant’s Quay, in Council buildings  Dooradoyle, or online at www.limerick.ie/council.

Limerick Mayor Liam Galvin said the books will allow people at home and abroad convey their sympathies to the family of “a true son of Limerick and a broadcasting institution whose passing will be mourned by millions”.

“Despite his fame and the fact that he was based in the UK throughout much of his career, Sir Terry often returned home to Limerick and never missed an opportunity on radio or TV to speak about his Limerick roots,” he said.
