“COME out from behind the apron strings and make your own statement”.
That was the call from Fianna Fáil councillor Kevin Sheahan at this month’s Adare-Rathkeale meeting in response to an article in the December 26 issue of the Limerick Post.
In the article, William Harty of the Askeaton Traveller Community took umbrage with an earlier statement of Cllr Sheahan’s where he stated, “An Irishman living in Ireland cannot be part of a separate ethnic group.”
Responding to the comment, Mr Harty described the statement as “discrimination of the highest manner”.
This week Cllr Sheahan suggested that Mr Harty had “significant assistance from people who should know better” with his statement.
“It is really insulting to the community I represent. I condemn people lending their assistance with such a hostile response. Come out from behind the apron,” he said to fellow council members.
