A WOMAN has been charged with the murder of her housemate and long-distance runner, Michal Rejmer, in Limerick sometime over the last two days of 2015.
Monika Matracka (34) with an address at The Pines, Briarfield, Castletory is charged with murdering the 38-year-old Polish man at the house they shared at the same address with another man.
It is alleged that the accused attacked Mr Rejmer with a knife sometime between December 30 and 31 last.
His body was found wrapped in a plastic sheet and covered by wooden pallets and bags of turf in the back garden of the home.
A post-mortem examination carried out by the State pathologist Professor Maria Cassidy confirmed Mr Rejmer suffered multiple injuries and died violently.
The 34-year-old accused woman made no reply when charged by Detective Sergeant Arthur Ryan at Henry Street Garda Station this Sunday morning.
At a special sitting of Limerick District Court, Judge Mary Larkin remanded the accused in custody to Limerick Prison until next Tuesday.
The victim, who was last seen when he left work at McDonalds in Castletroy on December 30, was popular member and long distance marathon runner with Dooneen Athletics Club and originally from Radom in Poland. He had been living in Ireland and Limerick for a number of years.
The alarm was raised on January 6 when a formal missing persons report was lodged with Gardai.
On Friday morning last, the grim discovery was made as Gardai began their inquiries and land search teams were searching the area.
In a moving tribute to Mr Rejmer, Dooneen Athletics Club posted a brief message to their Facebook club page;
“Michal was a runner, Michal was our friend,
He was kindness, compassion and love
Quirky and charismatic
He was beauty
He was dedication and commitment, He inspired us,
Made us laugh, made us smile,
He was a pocket of sunshine and hope when we were feeling down
He was energy and life when we were feeling weak
We have regrets, we have laments
We have sorrow and sadness and voids
We will miss him, we will remember him
We had a hero X
Rest in Peace Friend”
