Passenger growth at Shannon Airport is set to have a significant benefit for Limerick

The Christmas cheer from returning emigrants is set to be louder this year at Shannon with the airport set for an increase in passenger numbers for the festive season.

An estimated 4% more passengers will make the journey home through Shannon for Christmas as 57,000 use the airport, starting at the weekend just gone.

This is the third successive growth in Christmas passenger numbers at Shannon since it was made independent on New Year’s Day 2013. This festive season’s throughput will be up 22% on Christmas 2012.

Welcoming the growth Shannon Airport CEO Neil Pakey said.  “We’ve had a really busy start to the Christmas period.  We expect passenger numbers to be up by 4% up on last year’s figures, which speaks volumes for the range of air services, 35 destinations from and to 11 countries. These offer Irish passengers living abroad a range of options to return home to celebrate Christmas with their loved ones,” he said.

“It’s a magical time to be at an airport to witness the joy of families reuniting at this special time of year.”
