AN ARSON attack at a house on the Southside of Limerick city is understood to be linked to a violent feud between two families that has spanned more than ten years.
Shortly after 10am on Tuesday morning, three units of the Limerick City Fire and Rescue service were dispatched to a house fire in the Prospect area of the city.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control within an hour after a four man team swept the house checking for anyone who may have become trapped inside.
It is understood that the house was unoccupied at the time but a young dog was rescued by the firefighters who gave the distressed animal oxygen for suspected smoke inhalation.
Extensive damage was caused to the house and a forensic team are conducting investigations to determine the the origin of the blaze.
The fire is thought to be the latest in a number of incidents in a bitter feud between two families.
The row, which dates back to a knife attack in 2002, is believed to be behind a number of incidents involving the discharge of firearms, threats to kill, violent disorder and affray.
A number of people are currently before the courts on charges arising out of the feud and it is thought that this may be linked to Tuesday’s fire.
