A LIMERICK man who was involved in a stand-off with Gardaí has been remanded in custody because detectives feared he would intimidate his former partner if he was granted bail.
Shortly before 7:30pm on Friday, November 20, armed Gardaí and emergency services were dispatched to an apartment on Mallow Street, following reports of a man armed with a knife shouting threats from a window. The area was cordoned off and, after a number of hours, the man surrendered to Gardaí.
At a sitting of Limerick District Court last week, the 37-year-old man was accused of breaching a safety order, assaulting his former partner and producing a knife during the incident.
Detective Garda Gary Laide said it would be the State’s case that the man barricaded himself in the apartment and threatened to throw himself out an upstairs window. His former partner is pregnant and Gardai fear that he would be capable of delivering “some form of intimidation” if he was granted bail.
Garda Laide said that there was “a genuine concern” that he would not meet court dates and that further charges are likely.
Stating that the allegations before the court were very serious, Judge Marian O’Leary remanded the man in custody to appear before the court next week.
