UL HUSKIES picked up their first win of the season to breathe life into their bid for survival in the Basketball Ireland Women’s Premier League. The Limerick side iced a 71-60 win over Meteors from the free throw line but it took a crucial drive to the basket from Cathy Grant to maintain control in the final period.
“This is the culmination of our senior players taking on more responsibility and our younger players stepping up also,” according to Coach Des O’Sullivan. “Hopefully it can be a turning point for us.”
36 points from Jazmen Boone helped Maxol WIT Wildcats to end Pyrobel Killester’s home run in Clontarf. The American put in an all-round performance as a 9-0 run helped the Waterford side come from behind with less than two minutes to play.
DCU Mercy returned to the top of the table with their second win of the campaign over Singleton SuperValu Brunell while Team Montenotte Hotel were too strong for Portlaoise Panthers.
C&S UCC Demons survived the second quarter ejection of Kyle Hosford to return to the top of the Men’s Premier League on Sunday. Colin O’Reilly put up 20 points in the first half to see them through 106-87 at the Mardyke Arena while a win at Eanna on Saturday made it a six-point weekend for the champions.
Templeogue took their win streak to seven games with a tough 79-70 win at UCD Marian. The win sees them go level on points with Demons with a game in hand.
Pyrobel Killester strengthen their grip on third place with with a 79-65 win at UL Eagles. “We put the foot down in the third quarter,” said Coach Brian O’Malley. “Guys starting making their shots and we were better in transition.” Paul Dick made a scoring debut for Killester.
