ANTI Austerity Alliance councillor Cian Prendiville says he will call on the Garda Commissioner to publish details of an internal Garda inquiry into an incident where Metropolitan Mayor Jerry O’Dea was allegedly found to be drink driving.
The Limerick City North public representative, who is an AAA General Election candidate, also plans to approach other members of Limerick City and County Council to co-sign the letter to Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan.
Cllr Prendiville made the comments after a motion he submitted to this week’s meeting of the local authority was ruled “out of order” and omitted from the agenda.
The motion read: “I will move at the next meeting that Limerick City and County Council write to the Garda Commissioner asking them to publish the results of the recent inquiry into why there was no prosecution in relation to the high profile car crash in Limerick on December 11, 2014.”
In the letter explaining why the motion was not permitted on the agenda, the council cited “concerns” from an unnamed legal advisor, stating that a “Garda investigation is currently underway”.
“This report cannot be simply let to collect dust on a shelf. It should be made public, for all to see. There are strong allegations printed in the papers that a serious offence by a member of the political establishment was brushed under the carpet. We need the answers to these questions, and the AAA will keep pushing for this,” remarked Cllr Prendiville.
