Basketball – Killester establish title prospects in Women’s Premier League

molten_basketball_105397PYROBEL Killester ended DCU Mercy’s unbeaten streak to move to third place in the Women’s Premier League. The Dublin club have amassed more wins since October than in the entirety of last season, including the beating of reigning champions Team Montenotte Hotel.

“We’ve been genuine contenders all along,” said Head Coach Karl Kilbride after the 87-81 win. “We’ve had a chip on our shoulder that after we beat Glanmire, people were only talking about Glanmire losing. There isn’t a single person in our dressing room who believes we can’t win the league and we can’t win the cup.”

Maxol WIT Wildcats toughed out an overtime win away to Courtyard Liffey Celtics to maintain their early season form. “We really like to scrap and get after it,’ said Point Guard Katie Fox. “Going toe-to-toe with Celtics in overtime shows we can basically play with anyone for as long as it takes to get the win.”

Elsewhere, Portlaoise Panthers beat UL Huskies for their maiden win at home.  It lifts the midlanders to seventh place in the table and four points clear of the relegation zone.

In the Men’s Premier League, Templeogue are now the outright leaders thanks to a 109-84 win over UL Eagles. Michael Bonaparte consolidated his status as the league’s leading scorer with a game-high 25 points.

DCU Saints picked up their first win of the season with the help of debutante Duane Johnson. The American had 27 rebounds, 18 points and six blocks in a three-point win over UCD Marian.

Belfast Star picked up their second away win of the campaign at SSE Airtricity Moycullen. Neal McCotter’s side pulled through 74-71. “They missed from 17 feet with 15 seconds to go and Matthew Jackson iced the game with two free throws,” said the Head Coach. “We were actually quite poor tonight but we’ve played well and lost before so this was a good result.”
