THE Hunt Museum is as busy as ever for November, with a third concurrent exhibition, ‘Riverine’ by Maurice Gunning and Alice McDowell. The visuals, 65 prints, go on show next Monday November 23; the launch reception follows on Thursday 26 at 6pm.
‘Riverine’ is 9 Stories from Gambia, a project supported by the Simon Cumbers Media Fund that took place earlier this year. In a series of intimate photographs, the exhibition explores the physical and internal landscapes of nine women, using interviews and recordings.
Despite, or because of being custodians of tradition, these Gambians have decided to abandon the practice of female circumcision, illustrating how change can come about.
We learn that engaged in dialogue and leadership with religious scholars and village chiefs, local organisations are beginning to eradicate the practice.
