A NUMBER of cars were in seized in Limerick this Monday during a four hour checkpoint as part of Operation Thor.

Up to 20 extra gardai were brought on duty for the Garda operation targeting organised crime and the prevention of criminals using the motorway network around Limerick during their criminal activity.

Three cars were seized during the checkpoint that saw a heavy garda presence with personnel from varying units carry out searches and investigations of cars and their occupants in the Ballysimon area near the slip roads to the motorway network.

Superintendent Derek Smart conformed that as well as the seizure of vehicles, a number of prosecutions will follow for those found in breach of road traffic legislation.

Operation Thor was set up as a national strategy to curb criminal activity especially those who target rural areas. Thor follows Operation Fiacla which led to widespread arrests and up to 5,000 prosecutions.

Last weekend, gardai seized cash and drugs as part of a crackdown and organised crime through the operation’s initiatives.
