Lumiere, singing duo Éilis Kennedy and Pauline Scanlon have toured their distinctive sound from the cosy snugs of their native Dingle town to international concert halls including Carnegie Hall in New York and The Barbican in London. They first got together as a band in 2009 calling themselves Dingle White Females, which was fortunately later changed to Lumiere.
Two lauded albums produced by John Reynolds (Damien Dempsey, Sinead O’Connor) have made Lumiere an international success in World Music.
The duo sing old Irish songs from their youth and more contemporary material from Suzanne Vega and Sandy Denny and using their authentic, harmonious and evocative voices, create a sound that is all their own and yet sweetly familiar.
Limerick Post asked Éilis Kennedy about the upcoming gig in Limerick.
“We have been singing the stuff from the first album, ‘The West’s Awake’ and such because people have been requesting them but obviously we have a lot more than that. We will probably do a lot of Irish songs as well seeing as we are playing in the Lime Tree Theatre on the campus of the college. We won’t be singing any Christmas Carols, but we might sneak in one, you never know.”
The duo will be accompanied by long time guitarist Donogh Hennessy who played with Lunasa.
“He makes us sound like a bigger band, he has been playing with us now for years.”
Lumiere perform at Lime Tree Theatre on Thursday November 19.
