Bicycle_wheel_(close-up)CYCLISTS will have the opportunity to have their say on the development of cycling infrastructure throughout Limerick City over the next 10 years at a public consultation next week.

The event, which will take place at the Limerick Smarter Travel Office in The Granary on Michael Street on Thursday November 12 from 5 to 7pm, gives the public the chance to air their views on the future needs of cyclists.

According to Limerick Smarter Travel, the aim of the consultation is to identify the priorities for future investment in cycling in Limerick based on where people live, work and go to college or school.

Senior engineer with Limerick Smarter Travel, Donal Brennan, explained that the consultation is an integral part of the Limerick City and County Council’s efforts to “identify new and innovative ways” of encouraging commuters and residents to consider alternative methods of transport.

“Enhancing our local cycle network holds the key to encouraging people to consider cycling to work or school. Limerick City and County Council through the Limerick Smarter Travel Office, has seen a significant change in the public mindset towards the cycling in recent years and we feel that the provision of additional high quality, user-friendly cycling infrastructure across the Metropolitan Network will complement the progress already made,” said Mr Brennan.

A Cycle Network Plan, guided by the National Cycle Manual, is currently being developed and will feature an inventory of primary, secondary and feeder corridors where current demand is greatest and where future demand may exist.
