THE fourth in a series of evening lectures aimed at raising awareness of Limerick’s unique built heritage takes place on Tuesday, November 10 in the Fitzgerald’s Woodlands House Hotel, Adare, at 8pm.
Dr Rachel Moss of Trinity College Dublin, an art and architecture historian with a particular interest in medieval Ireland, will discuss some of the buildings and artworks produced in Limerick and its wider environs during the medieval period.
Dr Moss has published extensively and was the editor and principal author of Volume 1 of the Royal Irish Academy’s Art and Architecture of Ireland Series, published in November 2014.
Organised and funded by Limerick City and County Council, the built heritage lecture series takes place over five evenings and is free to attend.
The series looks at a variety of architecture in Limerick throughout the ages including pre-historic houses in Lough Gur, contemporary designed homes in the 21st century, Limerick’s castles, and medieval architecture and art in the Limerick region.
The lectures also consider the value of older buildings and structures to mammals and birds in terms of supporting wildlife and biodiversity.
Organised bi-annually by the Council, the programme is determined by a multi-disciplinary team of Council professionals including the City and County archaeologist, the conservation officer, the heritage officer and a planner.
The free lectures continue fortnightly until November 24. Brochures are available at local libraries, and from customer services in the Council’s offices in Merchant’s Quay, Dooradoyle, Rathkeale, Kilmallock and Newcastle West.
