DESPITE not taking the top national prize, Limerick’s towns, villages and housing estates fared well in this year’s Tidy Towns competition when the results were announced on Monday.
Categorised by population and location, the top three Limerick centres were 1976 national award winners Adare with 316 points; Ardpatrick with 309 and 1994 national award winners Galbally with 308.
Templeglantine, Broadford and Kilmallock all came home with the second highest scores in their categories of 287, 299 and 303 respectively.
Caherdavin was in a section of its own with a score of 244 points, as was was Newcastle West which scored 294 points.
Limerick city centre was awarded 274 points in the judging while Shannon took 291 points in its category.
Letterkenny in county Donegal took the overall award after 50 years in the competition with a score of 450, a massive improvement on last year’s marking of 323.
In all, 882 local committees in towns and villages throughout the country entered this year’s competition.
