LIMERICK FC enterain the champions elect Dundalk this coming Saturday night at the Market’s Field. The Louth side are currently eight points clear of Shamrock Rovers with just five games to go.
The table toppers stand between Limerick and a chance to get off the bottom of the table when the two meet at 6.30pm.
Last weekend Limerick drew 2-2 to Bray Wanders away from home, a result which leaves Martin Russell’s side on 23 points, just one point behind Sligo Rovers, who have a game in hand.
With Galway United and Drogheda United both on 26 points, the race for survival now has four very clear runners.
Ryan McEvoy’s 79th-minute equaliser kept Limerick on the bottom of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table as they twice let the lead slip in a 2-2 draw with Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds on Saturday evening.
Bray had started the brighter but Limerick hit the front past the quarter-hour. Ian Turner’s corner was knocked down at the back post where Dean Clarke was on hand to finish from close range.
However, the home side equalised immediately when a low cross was met by the in-rushing McEvoy.
Limerick restored their advantage ten minutes before the break when Ian Turner’s cross was met by Player of the Month Vinny Faherty who finished with calmness to keep his good form going.
Limerick almost won it at the death when an Ian Turner delivery was met by Darragh Rainsford but Bray’s Peter Cherrie got across to palm clear the header, as the Blues were forced to settle for a point, extending their unbeaten run to seven games.
Limerick can take hope ahead of this weekend’s game from the 1-1 draw between Dundalk and themselves back in April. However, Martin Russell’s men will be more than aware of the threat of the champions elect, having lost 6-2 to the same side in June.
