MAYOR of Limerick City and County Liam Galvin formally welcomed international students from more than a dozen countries to the city this week.
The students from Oman, Brazil, Malaysia, Nepal, Nigeria, India, China, Canada, USA and across Europe have come to study at Limerick Institute of Technology and were warmly welcomed by Mayor Galvin at a special event in the Council chamber.
The Mayor encouraged the students to become involved in the life of the city, and told them about Limerick’s rich cultural, sporting and historical heritage.
LIT international manager, Cliona Campbell said: “We were delighted to welcome over 100 international students to LIT this year for International Orientation week. These students are joining very significant numbers of Irish students coming to LIT through the CAO and direct entry routes.
“We have an active international programme, which provides opportunities for Irish students to study, train and work overseas, while at the same time bringing international students here.”
LIT president, Dr Maria Hinfelaar said that “in choosing to study at LIT, these students have opened the door not only to an internationally-recognised academic qualification but to adventure, a different culture and the opportunity to develop an international network of friends and contacts that will last a lifetime”.
