Body of young student recovered from River Shannon

THE body of an 18-year-old student has been recovered from the River Shannon during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The alarm was raised shortly after 1am when two gardai on patrol heard the young male enter the water and immediately ran to assistance.

Three units from the Limerick Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene within minutes as well as rescue boat FireSwift with three swift water rescue technicians.

However, the 18-year-old West Limerick student had submerged under the water.

A four man dive team from the Limerick Marine Search and Rescue conducted a number of searches in the water near the Shannon Bridge and Bishops Quay  behind Henry Street Garda Station and the body of the young man was recovered shortly after 2.30am.

The remains were brought to University Hospital Limerick for post mortem examination.

An Garda investigation is underway into the circumstances.
