LIMERICK FC’s bid to remain a Premier Division club continues to gather momentum, with 10 points collected from four games thus far in August.
Recent wins over Sligo Rovers and Bohemians were followed up last Friday with a hugely impressive 3-2 victory away to title chasing Cork City in a rollercoaster game where Limerick were pegged back twice before securing the points. Vinny Faherty, Dean Clarke and Paudie O’Connor all struck for the Super Blues at Turner’s Cross to give them a third consecutive victory.
After the game, Limerick manager Martin Russell (pictured) said: “It feels very good. The performance again was a collective one. Each and every man played for the shirt and delivered something special at Turner’s Cross.
“Their record at home shows how big of an accomplishment it was. The players deserve credit because I think overall we deserved it. There were heroic performances all through the team.”
Hopes were high that the Super Blues could make it four wins in a row against Longford Town at Markets Field last Monday and goals inside the first 20 minutes from Ian Turner and Shane Tracy had the stadium rocking.
The visitors were level by half-time though, and even after Robbie Williams restored Limerick’s lead, Stephen Rice ensured that Longford would return to the Midlands with a share of the spoils in a 3-3 draw.
Russell reflected afterwards: “To have so many chances and not to win it, and after being the better side, it’s frustrating, but it’s four points from two difficult games and 10 out of the last 12 points.”
Remarkably, Limerick’s last five games have witnessed 28 goals, and now the Super Blues have a weekend off prior to visiting Drogheda United on Friday August 28.
In local soccer, the opening weekend of the Premier Division season saw champions Janesboro begin the defence of their title with a 7-2 victory over Moyross.
Elsewhere, Geraldines defeated Summerville Rovers 4-1, Regional United were 1-0 winners over Ballynanty Rovers and Pike Rovers beat Aisling Annacotty 2-1. Mungret Regional drew 1-1 with Wembley Rovers and that was also the final score between Carew Park and Fairview Rangers.
