Anthony Mathison, a former Queensland Reds prop and Australia ‘A’ international, joins Young Munster from Brothers RFC in Australia after a very successful stint as their head coach. He replaces John Staunton who guided Munsters through to the Division 1A play-offs last season.
The Cookies wish the 34-year-old Mathison and the players a very successful campaign and they can be assured of the club’s full support throughout the 2015/16 run.
The ambitious Australian has settled in well at Tom Clifford Park and is eager for the new season to start. His own playing career, which included 31 Super Rugby appearances for the Reds, was cut short by a back injury in 2007.
Since taking up coaching, Mathison has used his on-field experience to great effect and Munsters will be hoping he can build on their promising performances and results from last year.
Mathison’s coaching debut in the Ulster Bank League will see Young Munster return to the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, September 12 for a rematch with reigning champions Lansdowne, who denied them right at the death in a memorable semi-final encounter last April.
