NMT (New Musical Theatre) will open at 69 O’Connell Street this Friday 14 with the Ireland premier of West End hit, ‘LIFT’.
A cast of eight experienced on stage through ‘The Voice of Ireland’ (Niall O’Halloran), Limerick Musical Society, Cecilian Musical Society and more plays out the coincidence of strangers taking the lift over 60 seconds. They move from the deep well of Convent Garden tube station to life outside as per usual for them, each singing to the audience their innermost lives, fears and hopes.
This compact space, minute timeframe – fleshed out to full show – and observations of a tube-side Busker are all devices to drive the pace. Connectivity between random strangers, or even the possibility of same, is the biggie.
With Michael Young, MA in Piano from Cork School of Music producing and Sarah Cahill directing, expect a lot of snap, crackle and pop from this go-ahead outfit.
“The show is in a promising state at the moment,” reports a modest Young as musical director. “We cannot wait to get into the theatre and allow our tech. teams to help us get our show to the next level. We are also looking forward to seeing our ‘LIFT’!
Last August’s ‘When Midnight Strike’ was another ambitious contemporary launch here, many talents working one set in perfect synchronicity. Choreography of movement as well as complex harmonies really shone, and the storyline was a frothy bomb.
Back to ‘LIFT’ and being exposed to the vulnerability of characters in this slice of one day only:
“It is incredibly musically fulfilling to work on a show that nobody knows. I get a clean slate and heft to sculpt the show musically in the exact way I wish”.
The show was created by Craig Adams, who did music and words, with Ian Watson. Book at box office on O’Connell Street or online by venue manager, www.limetreetheatre.ie. Two nights, Friday August 14 and Saturday 15 at 8pm.
