AN ELDERLY Limerick pensioner, returning home from bingo, was left to die after a mugger viciously attacked and robbed her of €20 that was in her purse.
The shocking incident occurred in Rosbrien on Sunday evening last as the 89-year-old woman, returned to her home in a taxi from a local bingo hall.
Hidden from view as the car pulled up, the mugger pounced on the woman and beat her before robbing her of her purse containing €20 in cash and leaving her to die outside her Limerick home.
As she tried to enter her home, the stalking attacker emerged and pulled her from the front door and dragged her to the garden as he tried to steal her handbag.
Gardai say that they understand that the woman was “turned upside down” during the attack where she sustained serious injuries.
The woman was hospitalised as a result of what are now described as life-threatening injuries.
Gardai from Henry Street and Roxboro stations are investigating the attack and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and assist in their enquires.
A man in his 20s was arrested from the Weston area of the city.
It has emerged that the male is the main suspect in a separate assault.
Another pensioner was attacked just a few days earlier in similar circumstances where the victim was followed into a toilet cubicle at the Roxboro Shopping Centre, attacked and robbed of €80.
