LIMERICK Smarter Travel have installed free bike lockers and stands at a number of city centre multi-storey car parks to help boost the number of people cycling to work.

The new bike parking scheme is the first of its kind in Ireland. The sustainable initiative features 19 bike lockers, stands and bike fixing stands equipped with simple tools to adjust and maintain bicycles. The bike lockers are also complemented by on-site security CCTV coverage.

Located at city car parks in Anne Street, Howley’s Quay and Denmark Street, Limerick Smarter Travel says the scheme enables cyclists to securely park their bicycles and helps to promote the Public Bicycle Share Scheme.

“These lockers are free to use and do not require pre-booking unlike in other locations throughout Ireland. They work exactly like a shopping trolley, simply insert a €1 coin and you get your coin back when you return to collect your bike,” explained Pat O’Neill, project manager, Limerick Smarter Travel.

“This initiative seeks to encourage the public to consider using their bikes when going to work or shop in and around the city centre. By providing parking facilities we are making the city centre more accessible and at no cost to cyclists,” he added.
