FINE Gael councillor Liam Galvin asked at this month’s Newcastle West municipal district meeting for the council to provide a second tap at Holy Cross Cemetery in Athea. In response, a council spokesman commented: “They are lucky to have a tap. Unfortunately, there will be no more taps going into cemeteries countywide. This is policy.” After Fianna Fail councillor Michael Collins suggested that he should “tap into the existing tap”, Cllr Galvin asked for a bin to be provided at the graveyard but was told there would be no additional bins due to lack of funds. “There are currently between 7 to 8,000 bins in our graveyards at a cost of around €25,000”, the council spokesman said.
