AN POST has given a firm commitment that the post office at Watch House Cross in Moyross will be re-opened following the closure of the Eurospar store where the facility had been located.

Thirty seven people lost their jobs last week following the shock closure  which resulted in the loss of 37 jobs. The Ballynantybeg Post Office, which operated from the Watch House Cross Shopping Centre, also temporarily closed and those in receipt of Department of Social Protection payments advised to collect it from Caherdavin Post Office for the time being.

Limerick TD Willie O’Dea, who is the Fianna Fáil party spokesman on Social Protection,  says he has made strong representations to An Post to ensure that a post office is reinstated in Moyross.

“I have received a commitment from An Post that they will reinstate the post office within the Watch House Cross complex in Moyross in the coming weeks,” Deputy O’Dea told the Limerick Post.

“I have been informed that the post office will be in a stand alone unit in the Watch House Cross complex and I think this is a wise move as post offices situated within larger shops can bring their own problems as we have witnessed with the closure of Eurospar in Moyross,” he added.

According to O’Dea, many elderly people were particularly anxious about how they would get their pensions since the closure of the Eurospar store in Limerick last week.

“I am assisting many of the former employees, who have been left devastated with the loss of their jobs, with Social Welfare and other queries.

“I believe it is vital for the community in Moyross that the post office re-opens and also that the now empty supermarket re-opens as soon as possible. I would urge the Council to do all they can in terms of an incentive regarding rates to encourage another major supermarket brand to open in Moyross.”

A spokesman for An Post said that they hope to return services to the Moyross area “quite quickly”.

“We hope to be back there in the next few weeks in a location quite close to where we had been,” he said.
