SOME 45 jobs will be lost in Newcastle West this week following the closure of the town’s SuperValu branch, it was announced on Monday.
The Garvey Group, which operates the SuperValu store in Market Yard, released a statement revealing that the store is to cease trading this Saturday, April 25 due to “difficult trading conditions”.
The company says it is committed to supporting staff members in securing alternative employment, and that they will be offered “a redundancy package, along with CV and interview training”.
They will also be informed of potential redeployment options within the Garvey Group, which also operates a Centra store in the town and a number of other SuperValu stores across Munster.
There are currently 11 full time and 34 part time staff employed at the Newcastle West SuperValu branch.
“The news isn’t good for Newcastle West or the surrounding area. It’s tough for the company and for the employees and it’s a huge economic blow to Newcastle West and the surrounding area,” local councillor Michael Collins (FF) told the Limerick Post.
“You also have to think of the people and the businesses who were supplying that supermarket. This will have ramifications across the board, but of course now is the time to think of the employees and their families. There were up to 50 people employed there, it was one of the biggest employers in the town.”
