THE NEW state of the art unit for the treatment of Cystic Fibrosis, which was built largely through the hard work of fundraisers, is set to open at the University Hospital in Dooradoyle in the Autumn.
The Limerick Hospitals group has applied for funding to fit the unit out and confirmed that new CF unit is part of the Leben Building which is currently under construction on the hospital site.
The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland has funded two floors in the Leben Building to provide both adult cystic fibrosis inpatient and outpatient units.
The good news comes in the wake of the National Cystic Fibrosis conference being held in Limerick.
The conference was held here to mark the construction of the fact that the new adult CF unit Following a mammoth fundraising drive by Tipperary, Limerick and Clare for Cystic Fibrosis (TLC4CF) over €5.3million has been raised through local fundraising and donations from CF Ireland and the JP McManus Pro Am Golf Tournament.
In answer to query from the LImerick Post, a Limerick Hospitals group spokesperson said that the “building is in the final stages of completion by the builder and has yet to be handed over to the HSE. A funding request for fit out of the CF area has been issued to the Mid West Hospital Development Trust. Subject to completion of building works, it is anticipated that the CF Unit will open on a phased basis in Quarter 4 2015”.
TLC4CF (Tipperary, Limerick &Clare for Cystic Fibrosis) is a regional branch of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and was founded to improve services and supports for people with CF and their families in the mid-west region. This support ranges from raising funds, to improving psychological services for people with CF and providing life-saving equipment for the Paediatric unit in University Hospital Limerick.
