MAYOR of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Sheahan has proposed that 40 acres of a 240-acre site in Askeaton, owned by Shannon Airport Ltd, be preserved for indigenous purposes. Speaking at this Tuesday’s Adare-Rathkeale municipal district meeting, he said that Shannon Development and the IDA have been unsuccessful in securing a major employer for the site which could be an ideal location on the Shannon Estuary to create local jobs. “Anything that can be done, should be done,” he added. Fine Gael councillor Tom Neville described the proposal as “concrete”, while Cllr Richard O’Donoghue agreed that small and medium businesses were the way forward.
