cancer run 2014 2The second Shannon Estuary Memorial Run takes place in Foynes on Sunday March 15 in memory of local man Larry Nestor who lost his fight to cancer in 2005.

Described as a “great community person”, Larry was prominently involved in many local voluntary organisations in Foynes.

The Nestor family decided to organise a memorial run in aid of the Irish Cancer Society to say thank you to all the cancer services that supported Liam during his long battle with the illness and to recall his unique contribution to the life of the local community .

Last year, 220 runners and 375 walkers took part in the inaugural run. Sponsorship came also from local companies and the final amount raised was €18,610.

On the day of the run last year, a tree was planted in front of the local community centre that Larry had worked tirelessly to build and memory stones with the names of cancer victims were placed at the base of the tree.

Proceeds from this year’s 5km run and 4km walk on March 15 will go to the Irish Cancer Society as well as the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation. The run will start at 1.15pm. For more details log onto www.shannonestuarycncermemorialrun.ie.
